Mapping Down Under

Posted on 29th July 2010 by Kevin in Education - Tags:

It usually starts with a television show, where a character mentions something about how the water runs down the drain in the opposite direction on the other side of the world. In the U.S., the opposite side is Australia, and kids are fascinated when things are not the same everywhere in the world. The idea of water is always mysterious, to young people as well as adults, and the way water flows is constantly baffling.

Soon enough, the adult will pull out a wall map , to demonstrate where things are on the globe, to show that there are places far enough away that water might flow in another direction entirely. This is the starting point, for many kids, in interest in geography. Teaching kids about geography is a way of literally opening up the world, and the process reflects the stages of the development of self.

At the beginning of a life, the awareness is all contained within the self, and it’s something that seems to happen until the development of language. Then, there is a subtle shift from the interior to the exterior, and everyone realizes that they are not the world, but a part of it. An Australia map can teach about the specifics of places that are not here, and this can lead to making important connections that can start to shape an entire world view.

We have all been met by salesmen at the door and, most of the time, we tell them no before we even give them a chance to explain their product. Apart from being distracted from whatever task we were working on, it is hard to know just who you are dealing with and whether or not they can be trusted. The direct sales industry is growing and changing and, armed with the right information, buying from a salesman is becoming an increasingly viable option.

The Internet is one piece of technology that has really made life easier. In a matter of minutes you can research a company and get feedback without ever leaving your home. When a salesman comes to your door you can quickly find out if the company is one that you want to work with. A sign of a good, reputable company is a solid history, like the Southwestern Company that has been around for over 150 years. Southwestern also offers a description of their products online at www.southwesternathome.com so you can verify the information that salesman gives you.

Many products and services offered through direct sales come with guarantees and warranties that you won’t get anywhere else. It is also beneficial to have someone there that can answer all of your questions and thorough explain the product.

Just like traditional retail establishments, there are companies that you love to work with and those that you don’t. By keeping your eyes open and remaining aware you can score some great deals through direct sales that you wouldn’t have even known about otherwise.

Even if you’re only visiting San Diego for a day, you must dine at Pacifica Del Mar . Their menu is a true homage to the sea such as the Pacifica Barbecued Sugar-Spiced Salmon, served on a pedestal of garlic mashed potatoes with Chinese long beans surrounded by a ring of fried wonton. The Salmon is rubbed with a spicy sweet concoction similar to a Jamaican jerk spice, and the Chinese beans were roasted in a fermented black bean paste. It’s details like this that makes Pacifica a notch above the best.

Located at 1555 Camino Del Mar, Pacifica is perched atop the Del Mar Plaza, which allows their patrons a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. Out on the patio, you’ll find the Breeze Caf ©, which is a part of Pacifica and is a coastal gathering spot for casual, outdoor dining. You can walk up from the beachside or from your San Diego luxury hotel and enjoy this eclectic bistro-style caf © that draws young and old alike to its large, sun kissed patio for breakfast, brunch and lunch, located on Del Mar Plaza’s mid-level.

Pacifica Del Mar restaurant reflects the soothing calm of its Oceanside location. Chef Christopher Idso’s creations will delight any palate with dishes that will make your mouth water just by reading his menu. His wine list is distinctive and complements all of the entrees. Once you’ve eaten here, you’ll always come back for more.
