Hawaii is synonymous with beautiful beaches. It is nearly impossible to visit any of the Hawaiian Islands without spending some time relaxing on the sand, or perhaps even checking out the marine life with a little snorkeling. With so many beaches to choose from it can be hard to know where to go. A lot of it depends on you and the type of activities you enjoy. Some beaches are great for surfing but not for snorkeling, and others are much better to enjoy from a distance as the sun is setting. Whatever your preference, here are a few of the beaches that top the lists and will help make your Hawaii vacation memorable .
By far the most popular beach in Hawaii, Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu is a must see spot for many visitors. Waikiki is as diverse as its visitors. At one end you can find a wide variety of watercrafts for every pleasure and pocketbook. Yachts, fishing boats, and canoes can all be found along the shores of Waikiki . The center part of the beach is probably the most popular, and the most crowded. Sunbathers line the beach, as well as children playing in the sand and the water. If you prefer a more distant look, the beach is also lined with scores of restaurants, shops, and hotels. The last portion of the beach is where most of locals hangout. Not nearly as crowded, there are nice quiet places to relax, swim, or have a picnic with the family.
For those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, Poipu Beach on Kauai is just the thing. Unlike many of the beaches in Hawaii, the waters on Poipu Beach stay relatively calm all year, making it a great location for families with kids, and it is only about 3 feet deep. If you are seeking a little more adventure you can swim out farther to the reef where the marine life will keep you occupied for hours.
Real adventures will enjoy visiting Hookipa Beach on Maui. Strong trade winds keep the tides rolling, making it a hotspot for both windsurfers and surfers. Though even if you’re not up for hopping on a board yourself, the spectacular view is worth the trip.
Lastly, often considered the most romantic beach is Lahaina Beach on Maui. Lahaina Beach is a popular spot for wedding and vow renewal ceremonies. Its lush tropical landscape creates an old Hawaiian feel. It is also the sight of the Old Lahaina Luau , which is one of the most authentic, and popluar, luaus on the island.
It seems that the whole island of Corfu is a museum. There are many ruins left around the area from hundreds of years of history that has taken place. So many occupations from outside have come in and added their forts and monuments to the face of Corfu Island. As a curious foreigner, it will be so interesting to get out of the quaint Corfu hotel and learn the stories that have been left along this land.
The Archaeological Museum in Corfu Town is a great place to get into the history of the area. It was built to hold a pediment collection and it still does today. The art pieces are rather large and consist of triangular cornice molding filled with Greek and Roman mythology, in the form of sculptures. The pieces can have some bright colors or may stay all white stone colored. The mythology that is most seen at this museum is the story of the terrifying female with the living snake hair that would turn people to stone, called Gorgon. Because the Gorgons have a deadly gaze, the sculptured icon was put on top of buildings and objects to help protect it. The oldest stone Gorgon pediment’s is actually found on top of the Temple of Corfu which was built sometime around 600 B.C..
Check out the Banknotes Museum+http://www.alpha.gr/page/default.asp?la=2&id=689 if you like to collect rare coins and keep track of foreign currency. This is a unique museum with hundreds of years of currency on display. Visitors can see the first Greek banknotes made around 1822 all the way to the last ones drawn in 2002 which was when the Greek money was converted into the Euro. There are also sketches and printing plates for some of these notes. There is a good history of the Ionian Bank with many historical photographs and documents. The museum is always expanding to add in art and costume collections as well.
Living in the United States, Americans take for granted how young the country really is in the history of civilization. This is extremely obvious to those who go out and visit exotic European cities, for reasons ranging from desire to see one’s heritage to a desire to have new experiences. While it is frequently overlooked for more well know historical and social spots in Europe ; Lisbon, Portugal is definitely not a city to miss when traveling across Europe. Whether you’re seeking medieval architecture or a night dancing, you don’t have to leave the city to experience a little of everything.
This city has many, many districts spread through it each with a little something special to it and much of it hidden in places you wouldn’t expect. Hotels found in Lisbon are in any district that suits your fancy, from staying in a glass sky scraper in the Uptown region to even staying in a hotel converted from a 19th century palace. and whereever you’re staying you’re sure to be able to view Saint George’s Castle, an ancient castle with some of its oldest areas dating the 6th century and built overlooking the city. Lisbon is divided primarily into seven districts: Uptown, Baixa (downtown), Bairro Alto, Belem, Parque das Nacoes, and Alfama.
Uptown and Baxia are fairly standard for most cities; uptown having most the skyscrapers and business district and downtown being wear the trendy shopping and most, but far from all, of the nightclubs. Other amazing night spots are readily found in all the districts including the Alfama who’s foundation withstood an earthquake that decimated most the city in the 1700′s and is a walk through time to visit. It’s said that the best way to experience it is to get a little lost and wander around admiring the perfect views. The largest contrast in the city is between it’s old quarters and the city’s riverfront, Parque das Nacoes . Designed and built, by some of the most creative architects of its time, for the World Fair Expo 1998 . The theme was “The Oceans: A Heritage for the Future” and the city’s entire waterfront was rebuilt for the event. Parque das Nacoµes is now one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in Europe. No visit to this city would be complete without visiting the Belem. From here many of the great explorers embarked on their voyages of discovery or returned bringing news of what they had found including: Prince Henry the Navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, and others.
You have just been promoted to a managerial position and your company has not had the time to send you to any leadership development seminars . You have never had this much responsibility before and it is kind of intimidating. You also have more work than you have ever had before and most of it seems to not be getting done. That is OK. There are a few things you will need to get used to doing, and until you get some corporate training these tips can help you out.
The main goals you should have as a manager are to motivate your employees and keep the operations rolling smoothly. This means that you may be putting out some fires, but you should try to keep that from being the main point of your job. Do each of these things once a day, and see how your team improves.
Delegate. It is hard to remember that it is OK to delegate tasks . It often feels like you have a lot on your plate and you are the only one who can do it. Know what other tasks the other workers have and delegate out the responsibility reasonably. Do not overload them with tasks, but also remember that people will let a set of tasks take up as much time as they feel they have. If they think they have all day to do three things, then three things will get done that day, if they feel that they have all day but they have to do ten things, they may not get them all done, but it is more likely that seven or eight things will get done.
Complete tasks . Set out your own tasks using the same principal above. Don’t give yourself too little either because then you won’t work to your full potential either. Instead, give yourself a little more than you can do in a day and be ready to try to get it all done that day anyway.
Praise people. Every worker feels a little unsure in something. When you know that one of your workers is doing something they aren’t sure of, make sure to praise them . If they didn’t do it the best they could have, praise them, let them know what could be better, then find something else to praise them about. This will make them feel good, and improve moral and willingness to try to do better.
